Osher Lifelong Learning Institute of VermontFrequently Asked Questions

If I join an Osher Institute in one VT community, can I attend programs offered by another Osher Institute?

Yes, your Osher membership entitles you to attend Osher programs in any Vermont community. It also entitles you to attend programs offered by the Elder Education Enrichment Lifelong Learning Institute in South Burlington. Call Myke Esposito at 660-7192 to request a copy of their program schedule. Visit EEE website.

Why should I join as a member versus paying to attend individual programs?

Joining your Osher Institute as a member is an easy and affordable way to support all the programs that are offered each term. As a member you will meet others who appreciate the opportunity to share in learning. Members also help determine the program topics and help shape the direction of the institute. Members receive the Osher newsletter and are invited to attend statewide Osher conferences.

Who decides what programs are offered by the Institute?

Your Osher Institute has a volunteer program committee which works with the steering committee to select programs and speakers. Members are encouraged to provide input to the program committee about speakers and topics of interest to them

Are there ways for me to get more involved in an Osher Institute?

Yes, all the Osher steering committees are volunteers who welcome others to share in the leadership of the institutes. The steering and program committees meet once a month. Assistance is encouraged in other areas including publicity, recruiting new members, and greeting members at program sessions.

Are there other Osher Institutes in the United States?

The University of Vermont Osher Institutes are part of a large network of Osher institutes all over the country. The Osher Foundation has funded over 73 colleges and universities to support lifelong learning programs for older adults throughout the United States. Osher members in Vermont can share ideas with other Osher Institutes in other states.

How Can You Help?

Join your Osher Institute each semester. Your membership dues are what sustain your local institute. You are also invited to make a tax deductible contribution to Osher to support the ongoing costs of running the statewide Osher Lifelong Learning Institute that are not covered by the endowment funds. Your contribution will assure that Osher will be sustainable long into the future. Please contact Deborah Worthley for more information on making a contribution to OLLI.  deborah.worthley@uvm.edu
